#MauiTweetUp on Feb. 20 At Kalama Park Whale Day Celebration

We have Twitter Friends @fallingrock and @tntnaz coming to Maui this month. For sometime now I had been planning a MauiTweetUP to meet them IRL. First I thought of doing one in Central Maui because that’s what would get the best attendance. However, as the dates got closer, I changed my mind and moved it back to Kihei.

Kris suggested another Whale Day Celebration tweetup. You know, that’s how Kris (@webnelly ) and I met for the first time. More of that story on Kris’ post here. So I decided to “ignore the potential chaos” of trying to find each other at the Whale Day Celebration at Kalama Park on Feb. 20 and decided that it would be a great day, time and place to meet up – hah!

Here’s the good news: ROADRUNNER MOBILE is sponsoring by providing me a 4G wireless connection that day so we cal LIVE TWEET this Maui Tweet Up. So, it actually will not be too hard to find each other. I know most of you have internet on you phones (I might be the only one who has outgoing text only – LOL!) Now, with me having the ROADRUNNER MOBILE services, we just tweet each other to find out where everyone is and meet at one place. Right?

Of course this has to be a little bit more organized than that. So I came up with a little plan. We will be flexible but this is what I am thinking. Please feel free to leave a comment below about your thoughts on this and we’ll work this out. So here’s what I think:

MAUI TWEET UP

Date: Feb 20, 2010 Saturday

Where:

1) First, meet at Starbucks at Kukui Mall at 9:00 AM to wait for the parade to come – so we can all watch the Whale Day Parade while drinking coffee and tea, talking story and tweeting away.

2) After the Parade, at 10:00 AM we’ll hang out at the Kalama Park Pavillion next to the playground and those who are not early birds and did not make it to the 9:00AM Tweetup can meet us there. This will be easier for those with kids because their kids can play at the playground while we tweet-up.

3) At approximately 11:00 AM we will go around and visit out Tweeter Friends @TikiTales and @Jamarilyn who have booths there. @AlohaKathy will also be at the @GreenMaui booth. We can help them promote their booths by tweeting and twitpicing from there Anyone else from our MauiTwitterville who has a booth there that we can promote?

4) After the visit around, everyone is on their own, unless we liked each other so much that we decided to hang with each other a bit more

@Webnelly’s First #MauiTweetup: Feb. 21st, ’09

Many are calling 2009 the year of Twitter, and for me it was the first of three #MauiTweetups. Oh, and by the way, I live in Chicago! Allow me to share a quick story about how the first one came about.

It was back in February ’09, and my wife Cindy and I were visiting Maui for our fourth time. It was our first trip to come see the popular whales that return each year – not to be confused with the Twitter fail whale. Anyway, in preparation for the trip, I was blogging and tweeting (as @webnelly) about all of our trip plans and had built up a nice group of Maui tweeps I had been following. It wasn’t but a month before our trip when Liza from A Maui Blog (@AMauiBlog) had held the very first Maui Tweetup on January 29th. It looked like such a blast.

Right away, I knew I want to attend the next one while we were visiting. Working with Liza and going through the itinerary my wife and I had planned, we decided to schedule a little get together at Kalama Park during the Whale Day Celebration as part of the annual Maui Whale Festival. And the rest, as they say, is history.

As a frequent visitor to the Valley Isle, and someone who likes to follow along with Maui happenings in between trips, getting to meet my Twitter friends IRL added an entirely new dimension to our visits. We had a great time talking story and listening to some of the live music at the festival (can you say John Cruz?). It was really nice getting their insight on the island and about everyday life on Maui.

Kudos to @AMauiBlog for choosing the Whale Day Festival as the location for that tweetup. While my wife and I regret not being able to make it back for this year’s Whale Festival, I think it would be a great idea to continue that Whale Day Tweetup tradition. Who knows, maybe we can reach out to @PacificWhale and make it the biggest #MauiTweetup yet!

MauiTweetUp Supports PACT

This event is a fundraiser for PACT (Parents And Children Together), the nonprofit agency that operates the Maui Family Peace Center and other programs to promote safe and happy households in Maui County.

Tickets will be on sale for $10 in advance after January 15 at Request Music (Wailuku), Tradewinds Mart & Deli (Maalaea), Farmer’s Market of Maui (Honokowai), Eskimo Candy Seafood (Kihei), Maui Coffee Roasters (Kahului), and Lunaroma (Paia). Tickets will also be on sale at the door the night of the show for $15. All proceeds go to PACT Maui.
